A SOAS University of London PhD Research Project

Hong Kong Artists in Britain (HKAiB) is a research project by Jennifer Fleming, PhD Candidate at SOAS, University of London. The research investigates artwork made by artists of Hong Kong descent living and working in Britain from 1997 onward.

The project seeks to create a body of research that collectively represents the creativity and innovation of Hong Kong diaspora artists, while also celebrating the individuality of each artist’s practice and recognising individual contributions toward British art discourse.

This is an ongoing research project and I seek to include the voices of as many artists as possible. I am keen to work with artists from a wide range of backgrounds. Some of the artists featured in this study were born in Britain or have lived in Britain for many years and would describe themselves as British; others may have immigrated to Britain more recently and may still consider themselves Hong Kongers at heart. Many identify with a more nuanced and complex cultural identity which may include British, Hong Kong and Chinese elements, and which may change over time. Artists in this study work with a wide range of media and themes and are at varying stages in their artistic career.

If you would like to be involved with the study or to find out more please get in touch!
