Researcher Biography

Jennifer Fleming | PhD Candidate | SOAS, University of London

I obtained my Masters in History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia in 2020 at SOAS, University of London, passing with Distinction. During this period I researched the art of Lui Shou-kwan and the Hong Kong New Ink Movement of the 1960-70s. This led to a fascination with Hong Kong art and cultural identity, which inspired me to research the understudied area of Hong Kong diaspora artists working in Britain.

My art historical training is enriched by my skillset from 15 years as a practising artist with a BA Hons Fine Art and 9 years experience running an arts educational business. This has convinced me of the need to prioritise close visual analysis of artworks and phenomenological experiences of the artist’s making process to investigate the questions posed by this research project. I believe this enables the researcher to get closer to understanding the artist’s original intention.
